At the end of the 1971 season, the FIA changed the rules for the European Touring Car Championship by banning cars with an engine capacity over 5000cmᵌ, which ruled out the 300SEL 6.8 from further competition.

Nevertheless, the AMG 300SEL 6.8 appeared at the Le Mans pre-test races on 18 March 1971 as car #48 driven by Hans Heyer, again in the same yellow paint as seen at Hockenheim at the season finale, but with sponsorship again from S.E Sieger. However, the AMG was not entered in 24 Hours Le Mans on 10/11 June 1972.
